Plus X Brighton Team

Plus X Brighton is a seven storey innovation hub for all types of business members from freelancers to corporates, located in the creative and purposeful city of Brighton. The innovation hub encompasses business growth innovation programmes, support for sustainable product makers, design workshops, podcast studios, media suites, meeting rooms and event space, and wellbeing benefits including yoga classes and a nutritional cafe. With growth at the very core of the Plus X business ecosystem, members often begin their Plus X journey with one of our desk memberships, before taking on a team and moving into one of our studio office spaces (available for 3-150 people).

Hardware and Prototyping Workshop

Equipped with the highest specification machinery and tools for batch production, the Plus X Brighton Workshop offers space for makers, creators, and product designers to experiment with prototypes and begin batch production for parts.

The hardware workshop is made up of:

  • Fablab
  • Heavy Duty Makerspace
  • Wet lab and bio area
  • Material library
  • Spray booth
  • Assembly space

The Fablab in Brighton

Our digital fabrication workshop is a space for prototyping and experimenting. The Fablab is home to a Batch Works 3D printer farm enabling our members to auto-print small batch runs of product parts. Over the lockdown period, we helped Batch Works use this tech to make over 10,000 visors for use by the NHS.

Heavy-duty workshop

This space is for working on bigger projects or to produce high-precision engineering or manufacturing prototypes in metal, plastic or wood. As well as digital machines for cutting and milling, you’ll also find more traditional workshop equipment in here such as bandsaws, mill drills and sanders.

The space is fitted with industrial extraction, keeping the air quality clean (air quality is a key component of our commitment to WELL Building Standards).

  • For bigger projects and producing high-precision engineering
  • For manufacturing prototypes in metal, plastic or wood
  • Digital machines for cutting and milling,
  • Traditional workshop equipment such as bandsaws, mill drills and sanders

The Bio Lab

The wet lab or bio area is a space for wet designs to come to life. Designers can work with plaster, casting in silicone or brewing biomaterials.  Lucy Hughes, founder of MarinaTex, and winner of our Disruptors competition, will be using this space to develop her plastic alternative, made from waste from the fishing industry.

    Having worked in the world of marketing and events over a number of years, Emma has developed an invaluable understanding of how to successfully implement commercial led marketing initiatives. Emma champions creativity, productivity and collaboration to drive the successful growth and scale-up of Plus X innovation hubs across the country.

    Scale-up Programme Manager

    With a wealth of experience in Innovation Consultancy, Sam aims to help all types of businesses ignite the fuel of innovation. At Plus X Brighton, Sam oversees all accelerator and innovation schemes (including the BRITE programme) to help drive change, entrepreneurship and business growth amongst ambitious Sussex-based businesses.

    Alex has a wealth of experience in launching and managing shared work spaces in Brighton. She always aims to deliver the best member experience for the Plus X Community (members, visitors and team alike). Putting Plus X on the map as the most productive and positive work space is her ultimate goal and no ask is too big or too small for her!

    Andrew Sleigh

    Workshop Manager

    Andrew: a maker, designer and educator, uses the specialist facilities and technology in the workshop to enable creativity, innovation and learning within the Plus X Community. With a background in digital fabrication, teaching and grassroots technology communities, Andrew focuses on inspiring creativity in individuals from all communities.

    Marketing Manager

    Born and bred in Brighton, Amber is an expert in creating powerful campaigns and positive social impact in the local community and beyond. Amber has managed various award-winning brands and marketing projects, such as the UK’s first zero plastic solution that champions change for the future. Focusing on a variety of projects, Amber uses her passion for creativity to create amazing content and help support businesses at Plus X in their growth journey.

    Project Officer

    Delivering world class innovation programmes is something Lou is committed to in her role at Plus X Brighton! As an experienced, resilient, strategic project manager, Lou works closely with both the Programme Manager and Head of Projects to ensure the successful delivery of BRITE. She also contributes towards the programme’s mission of supporting SMEs to grow and scale through innovation.

    Partnerships Lead

    Sarah splits her time across two innovation programmes at Plus X Innovation hubs. The fully funded business support programme, BRITE; and the sustainable materials programme, Better World Collective. Igniting and driving ideas to unearth new innovations & growth is something Sarah is passionate about and so she focuses on building purposeful partnerships to initiate positive change.

    From building communities, recruiting organisations and managing relationships; to designing and programming events, running workshops and mentoring small business owners Abby does it all! With a positive and pragmatic attitude Abby works closely with the Programmes Manager to facilitate the delivery of the fully funded businesses support offered at Plus X Brighton.

    Katie channels her passion for craft and design into providing specialist support and expertise in the Plus X Brighton workshop. Supporting members through their innovation journey is what Katie is committed to in her role to help create new ideas, new inventions and new businesses. Keeping the workshop safe is a priority for Katie, so if you need any tips or tricks Katie is the one to ask!

    Jess is committed to promoting equal opportunities for all. At Plus X Brighton Jess spends her time developing the B.O.L.D initiative. B.O.L.D focuses on inspiring people with disabilities to get back into the workplace, by providing individuals with expertise, work experience and guided support. As a dedicated, compassionate and ambitious individual Jess is determined to initiate positive change for the future.

    As a hugely successful Brighton-based musician, Charlie is an audio-visual wiz! Splitting his time between front of house duties and all things tech-related, Charlie knows how to provide specialist support using our state-of-the-art facilities at Plus X Brighton to help visions become a reality.

    After finishing a 12-month Apprenticeship at Plus X Brighton, Zach has developed as an outstandingly creative photographer and videographer.
